Customers, National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section board members and friends were thrilled to see the transformation of the Council Resale Shop, following an extensive renovation. The store, which was relaunched last summer, is located at 75 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield and is now light, bright and airy with racks full of new and nearly-new clothes. For more information, please visit https://www.ncjwbcs.org/thrift-shop.html. Photos by Hilary Viders.
In 1893, Hannah G. Solomon of Chicago was asked to organize the participation of Jewish women at the Chicago World’s Fair. When she discovered that participation only consisted of pouring coffee, she walked out and, by the end of the World’s Fair, had founded the National Council of Jewish Women, changing forever the role of Jewish women and the nature of volunteerism.
In 1923, fourteen women in Bergen County, NJ carried on Hannah's tradition and formed the Bergen County Section of NCJW to make a difference in their community. Today, with 1,000 members, NCJW BCS remains an active part of the fabric of Bergen County, committed to providing non-sectarian community service, advocacy, education and philanthropy.
As a member of NCJW Bergen County Section you will be connected to a growing network of courageous and compassionate individuals who work together to improve the quality of life for women, children and families every day. We join with 180,000 other advocates nationally to make our voices heard in New Jersey, Washington DC and Israel as we fight for social justice. As an organization of 1,000 members, we take action and work together to be a positive force for change.
Join our network of caring and compassionate volunteers and make a difference in the lives of women, children and families in Bergen County. NCJW Bergen County Section offers a wide range of opportunities that fit any schedule and interest. Whether you have an hour or two or a few days a year to offer or if you would like to help on a weekly or monthly basis, we have a place for you. Whether you’re passionate about empowering women, mentoring children and families or cheering older adults, there are opportunities for you.
For over 100 years NCJW BCS has championed issues affecting women, children and families. From the White House to the local Town Councils, NCJW has always been a vocal force in shaping bold progressive public policy. Whether you're passionate about reproductive freedom, gender equity in US and Israel, voter rights or other progressive causes, you’ll get a chance to work toward federal, state and local policies that mean the most to you. All it takes is five or ten minutes to call or email a legislator, an hour or two a month to plan social justice programs, a day or two each year to march in a virtual or in-person rally or an hour to attend a monthly educational program. Your voice combined with thousands of other voices makes a difference in creating a more equitable and just world.
