Some topics to be discussed are Lois’ family upbringing and meeting her husband-to-be; Paula and Sound’s experiences with one white Jewish and one Black gentile parent, as well as their grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins from both sides of their family; growing up outside and inside of Teaneck; and their personal identities. Virtual Trip: A Feminist Walk Thru Harlem: Celebrating Remarkable Women

Join NYC licensed tour guide Leigh Hallingby on an intriguing slide presentation with live commentary followed by Q & A. Walk through both Central Harlem and Spanish Harlem, stopping at places honoring accomplished women like A'Lelia Walker, Nicholasa Mohr, and Zora Neale Hurston. Stops include murals and mosaics, statues, sidewalk plaques, named buildings, and commemorative street corners. Formerly a long-time Teaneck resident, Leigh now loves living on Manhattan’s West Side. She is thrilled to share her enthusiasm for exploring NYC. Fee is $18.

To kick off our Centennial Celebration in style NCJW BCS hosted a 1950s-themed membership event on Tuesday, October 25 at the Brownstone Pancake Factory in Englewood Cliffs. Donning poodle skirts and saddle shoes, members enjoyed a night filled with entertainment, dancing, food and camaraderie. We look forward to celebrating a century of volunteerism, advocacy, fundraising, philanthropy and sisterhood in Bergen County and beyond. After the resounding success of eight prior seasons, we are inviting you to join us for our ninth season of the outstanding New Jersey Symphony “Play the Masters” and help NCJW BCS at the same time. It’s an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon with other members and friends and also support programs for people in need. There are six performances at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark on Thursday afternoons. Transportation by motor coach is included in the price for all six concerts. Louise Melling, Deputy Legal Director and Director of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Center for Liberty, ACLU, will speak on "Roe Overturned and What's Ahead." The Ruth Bader Ginsburg Center for Liberty encompasses the ACLU’s work on reproductive freedom, women’s rights, lesbian gay bisexual and transgender rights, freedom of religion and belief, and disability rights. Ms. Melling leads the work of the ACLU to address the intersection of religious freedom and equal treatment.

ACROSS GENERATIONS: The Impact of the Roe Decision

Bergen County Section is calling on women of all generations to come together for the first in a series of Courageous Conversations about the impact of the Roe decision. “Does the decision really bring us back to the abortion horrors of the late 1960s and early 1970s?” “Does it foreshadow the future loss of protections for others as well?”
The one-hour Zoom event will be led by the Honorable Loretta Weinberg, Majority Leader of the New Jersey State Senate (retired), who will be joined by Helen Archontou, MSW, LSW and CEO of the YWCA Northern NJ, and Lil Corcoran, LPC and Executive Director of the Women’s Rights Information Center. Gabrielle Beck, one of our 2022 NCJW scholarship recipients, will serve as moderator. Participants are encouraged to join in the conversation by sharing their own personal stories, experiences and questions so that we may all realize, energize and mobilize.
