VANDERBILT MANSION, CIA AND SPECTACULAR VISTAS

On September 24th a group of forty-four (members and a few non-members) drove north on a beautiful fall day to Hyde Park. Our first stop was at the magnificent gilded-age 54-room Vanderbilt Mansion. A National Park Ranger provided a marvelous tour of the country home of Frederick and Louisa Vanderbilt and gave us an insight into the lives of the rich and famous. Leaving the Mansion we drove through some of the 200 acres of National Parkland and enjoyed breathtaking views of the Hudson River.

We then proceeded to the Culinary Institute of America where we enjoyed a three-course luncheon at the Caterina de Medici Restaurant. Following lunch, we had a student-led tour of the CIA. We learned that the CIA provides Associate, Bachelor and Masters’ degrees, and we observed students in the various kitchens they rotate through.

As an extra bonus, on the ride going and coming we had our first view of the beautiful autumn leaves.
