The Plight of LGBTQ Older Adults

NCJW BCS STUDY GROUP

The last study group session of the year was held on May 23rd at the Riverside Mall Conference Center with approximately 30 people in attendance.  Marilynn Friedman and Bari-Lynne Schwartz were the coordinators of the program.

Our group had the pleasure to hear both Benjamin Fisher (Health and Wellness Coordinator for Garden State Equality) and Lorraine Joewono (Director of the Bergen County Division of Senior Services) speak on the plight of elder LGBT adults. It is clearly evident that LGBT seniors face serious challenges as they age with regard to insurance, housing, acceptance within institutions, and inclusion in recreational activities.  Mr. Fisher talked about the efforts that his organization is making to support LGBT individuals and make the general community aware of their needs.  Ms. Joewono shared that her agency is continuing to seek ways to help those who identify as LGBT find opportunities and resources to enhance the quality of their lives. Pamphlets and brochures were distributed to those who attended.
