SEXUAL VIOLENCE: CHANGING THE CULTURE FORUM

Pictured above is our panel of experts at NCJW BCS 6th Annual Advocacy Forum – SEXUAL VIOLENCE: CHANGING THE CULTURE having a conversation about this timely topic and presenting some strategies to reduce the prevalence of sexual assault.

On November 21, 2017, over 200 attendees were inspired to change the culture of Sexual Violence as they listened in to a dynamic conversation. The diverse audience was comprised of NCJW Bergen County Section members and representatives from over 50 program partners (human service, education, faith based and advocacy organizations).

We learned about programs in place like educating our preschoolers through Project S.A.R.A.H. and an effective student group at Dwight Morrow High School (including members of its football team) working to change attitudes.

We learned about the NJ Taskforce on Campus Sexual Assault which needs to be reauthorized and its recommendations implemented.

We learned that healingSPACE has a phone app where those seeking help after a sexual assault can chat online or talk on the phone to trained advocates.

We believe the audience carried with them new insights and strategies to help continue the conversation. Everyone went home with follow-up materials – an action post card to be mailed to our state legislators regarding the campus assault task force reauthorization and a comprehensive list of resources.

It was a highly informative and stimulating afternoon. As one audience member remarked “I thought I knew a lot about sexual violence, how wrong I was.”
