NCJW BCS MEMBERS PARTICPATED AT THE YWCA BERGEN COUNTY healingSpace CLOTHESLINE PROJECT

On September 20, NCJW BCS members attended the Clothesline Project, a day to raise community awareness of violence against women, men, and children and to demonstrate support for survivors.

Members were moved by the messages on the t-shirts designed by survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, child abuse and personal violence.   Creating t-shirts promotes healing by providing an avenue for survivors and their loved ones to break the silence of the devasting impact of violence on their lives.

In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Clothesline, the program paid homage to the women who paved the way for the project.   Lydia Pizzute, a featured speaker and in 1993 the Director of the Rape Crisis Center of Bergen County (now the YWCA Bergen County healingSPACE), noted that the first Clothesline Project with 90 shirts was displayed on the Green in Hackensack and that “while each shirt tells an individual and deeply personal story, together they speak in a single and undeniable voice against violence.”

NCJW Bergen County Section has been a proud community sponsor of the Clothesline Project since the beginning – over 25 years ago!
