IMMIGRATION DETENTION: UNJUST AND IMMORAL

On Tuesday, December 15th, the National Council of Jewish Woman of Bergen County held a Lunch and Learn Study Group presentation at Temple Emeth in Teaneck, New Jersey. After lunch the group of 56 members and guests had the pleasure of hearing a very interesting and timely presentation by Sally Pillay, on the topic of Immigration Detention: Unjust and Immoral. Ms. Pillay is an activist for immigration rights and serves as the Director of (click): First Friends of NJ and NY. This organization supports detained immigrants and asylum seekers by providing humanitarian and advocacy services. The complex and stressful plight of detained immigrants was given emphasis by her use of recorded personal stories. In addition, she was accompanied by a man who had experienced first-hand the deplorable conditions in several centers and the poor support services available to those in need. The description of the conditions where these asylum seekers are held and the process of being released were quite a revelation for the audience, many of whom afterwards inquired about how to get involved with those suffering under these conditions.
