BERGEN COUNTY NCJW MEMBERS JOIN ESSEX FOR POWERFUL LUNCH AND LEARN
On Thursday, January 26 ten NCJW BCS members attended a Lunch and Learn sponsored by NCJW Essex County. Not only did we have a fabulous lunch, but we heard a wonderful program with speakers discussing Crisis Pregnancy Centers and Sex Education in Grades K-12.
We learned that there are more Crisis Pregnancy Centers than Abortion Clinics in the United States. The Crisis Centers open near or next to licensed abortion facilities but do not perform abortions. Their purpose is to convince and deceive. Women go to the Crisis Centers thinking that they will be having an abortion. Instead, they are strongly urged to keep their babies or give them up for adoption. There are no doctors on premises, and many women have no idea that these centers do not provide the abortions that they are seeking. Often these Crisis Centers give out false information. Many get federal funding but are unregulated.
Only 24 states require that Sex Education be taught in the schools and only 13 states require medically-accurate information be part of the curriculum. Although New Jersey ranks high, K-12 federal funding will probably be cut with the new administration.
In some states the health department and the doctors who work there are forced to distribute false information about the developing fetus. As much as 1/3 of the information can be inaccurate.
We left the meeting once again realizing how much work we have to do to make sure that women have control over their own bodies.
