BEING MUSLIM IN AMERICA

This year’s Lunch and Learn program of Timely Topics and Tasty Treats, held March 5, 2019 at Temple Emeth, was a huge success. More than 80 NCJW BCS members and guests enjoyed a delicious lunch catered by Foster Village.

Our speaker, Sabeeha Rehman, gave an enlightening presentation on “Being Muslim in America.”  She and her husband, Dr. Khalid Rehman, joined us for lunch and great conversation.

Sabeeha spoke of her arrival In the United States as a young bride, following an arranged marriage. She was quick to assure us that her marriage has been a very happy one and told us about her life as an immigrant to the US from Pakistan and her experiences of raising two sons in the absence of a Muslim community. Her talk was filled with her life events as she shared stories of living in New York City. We enjoyed her humor and were touched by her and the situations she faced. Sabeeha worked to establish a Moslem community on Staten Island, culminating in the building of a mosque, and she is a board member of the Moslem Jewish Solidarity Committee.

Many of our members purchased copies of her prize-winning memoir, “Threading my Prayer Rug: One Woman’s Journey from Pakistani Muslim to American Muslim,” which is also available as an Audible book, read by her.

Her talk was certainly a Timely Topic in today’s political and social environment.
